The Malta Ranger Unit has initiated a fundraising campaign to secure financial support for its environmental protection activities. The newly established NGO aims to recruit additional field officers and upgrade operational equipment through public donations.
On 23 June 2023, the organization presented its charitable objectives to iGEN alongside three other community groups to obtain sponsorship. The unit officially registered as a non-governmental entity in July 2023, evolving from the Majjistral Park Rangers previously supported by iGEN for the Heritage Parks Federation. The group was created to address the disconnect between environmental crime reporting and successful legal prosecution.
Field operations concentrate on monitoring illegal littering, unauthorized fires, fishing violations, poaching, and construction within Natura 2000 sites or Outside Development Zones. Additional monitoring priorities include construction waste dumping, vehicle and noise pollution, unregistered waste carriers, and unauthorized off-road driving.
Fundraising Campaign and Volunteer Programs
The current donation drive runs from 28 July to 28 August 2023, targeting €50,000 in contributions. The funds will finance equipment upgrades and the hiring of new rangers. Two officers will complete an 800-kilometer sponsored walk across Spain along the Camino de Santiago route during the campaign period. The participants will also produce a publication examining the relationship between natural environments and mental wellbeing. The unit operates independently and relies entirely on community and business contributions. Volunteer training programs remain available for individuals wishing to assist with field operations. The organization combines legislative advocacy with educational initiatives in local schools. Legal proceedings form a central component of its strategy. Cami Appelgren, founder of the Malta Ranger Unit, stated: "Technically the role of a ranger is just like that of any citizen.
The only difference is that we are better prepared to be effective witnesses in court assisting the executive police in the process of prosecution."
